Imagination Denver

Denver, Colorado

We are a dynamic group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who meet every Saturday morning. We came together from six different schools, at first not knowing one another and have grown into a community. Each time we meet is a celebration with our leader and our two volunteers Jordana and Abraham! With music setting the backdrop, smiles grow, laughter flows and creativity bubbles over and surrounds us. Spend some time with us and you’ll be sure to see spontaneous dancing kick up as we share and let our imaginations run loose with joyful creativity. The happiness is infectious, the learning playful and the love felt by all who enter.

What a magical year it has been! We’ve created lemonade stands and jewelry stores from Makedo and cardboard. Prank handshakes and light up shoelaces and more with littleBits. And Sparkfun, what fun! Makey Makeys, Inventor’s Kits and so much more! Robotics? We’ve done it! How amazing to be 8, 9, 10, 11 years old and learn to create the circuitry that enables a banana to become a computer’s space bar or to be working with arduino boards to create an LED display! We’ve learned code with Scratch and enjoyed creating and competing in games made with it. We had the incredible experience of designing our own logo and then silkscreening them onto the most glorious t shirts displaying our motto, “Always Think Outside the Box!” and so much more! And cardboard creativity, always cardboard creativity. To think, it all started with an arcade. A cardboard arcade. And a door handle.

My experiences have been exciting and eclectic. I began my career in education in 1988 with a Commodore 64 and a dream to guide children to find their strengths and passions. I left teaching for a number of years to work in the imaginative worlds of network television and feature film production. Writing and all things creative are my passion. Hikes in the mountains surrounded by nature and daydreaming have planted the seeds to many a new adventure. I am thrilled to bring my many experiences and limitless enthusiasm for seeing the world through the eyes of a child to the Imagination Chapter Pilot Program!

Fun facts:

1) I spent many hours aspiring to make curved drawings on my Etch-a-Sketch. 2) Favorite childhood book: ‘James and the Giant Peach’ 3) Song I belt out at the top of my lungs when driving alone: “Jack and Diane” by John Mellencamp
