What makes our Imagination Chapter unique? We are inventors, scientists, mathematicians, engineers, writers, readers, and storytellers. Our classroom motto is: be safe, work as a team, and have fun! Every Friday afternoon we literally
scream with joy because, that is the time we get to play, giggle, and have fun as we work on projects that we want to work on or we are curious about. We love inventing with cardboard and recyclables, going ‘shopping’ for supplies at Ms. Herrera’s Shop, reflecting in our tinkering journals, and collaborating with our 5th grade buddies.

I was born in Guatemala City and moved to the USA at the age of 7. On my first sighting of snow I saw possibilities for snow cones. It is this way of thinking that excites me as a 1st grade teacher at a STEM school in the Santa Monica School District. I have been teaching for about 20 years and love what I do. Before becoming a teacher I was a police officer for the Los Angeles Police Department and before that I was a clothing designer. I know I’m a very lucky person in that I have been able to remake myself a few times. I believe that it is my background that enables me to see how the future of education is more than just reading, writing and math. We are shaping the ways students see themselves in the future as natural leaders, inventors, and scientists.
Fun facts: 1) I learned to scuba dive in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia but am afraid of going in the ocean. 2) I dress up my dog in costumes and take pictures of her to send to friends and family for the holidays.
