With the enthusiasm of twenty-six incredible first graders, the “Imagination Club” was launched at SCDS in the fall of 2014. The club meets weekly during school hours and is facilitated by Molly Hill and Melissa Kang (first grade teachers) and Patti Wick (The Director of Innovation in Learning.) Over the course of our first year, these first graders, through Creative Play and design/build challenges, have already shown growth in skills that will prepare them for their future education, careers, and contributions to society: perseverance, risk-taking, problem-solving, collaborating, communicating, reflection, and creative thinking. The Imagination Club will continue as a weekly first grade endeavor next year, but we will also be expanding to Kindergarten and second grade twice a month.

I am the Director of Innovation in Learning at Sonoma Country Day School, a K-8 independent school in Santa Rosa, California. I am fortunate to work with a team of incredible colleagues to incorporate new and innovative practices into teaching and learning. My passion for education and interacting with children has spanned more than twenty five years as a bilingual teacher, administrator, and educational consultant in public, charter, and private schools. I love reading, dancing, hiking, yoga, and spending time with family, friends, and our dog. Very recently I seem to have developed a strong interest in creating things out of cardboard! I wonder why?
Fun facts: 1) I used to do lots of arts and crafts, including building stained glass windows. 2) I flew a hang glider for a short time but eventually traded it in for a guitar.
