Rashkis Imagination Chapter
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
All of the 90 fifth-graders at Rashkis Elementary have enjoyed 20 minutes each day for Preferred Activity Time, PAT for short. Each of the four classrooms have dedicated makerspaces stocked with a variety of materials from found objects and recyclables, to Makedo tools, littleBits, and SparkFun equipment. Students work through an inquiry process they call The Lifecycle of a PAT Project. Most projects involve production of a creative artifact. Research findings and creative artifacts are shared in a TEDtalk-like presentation, then displayed in a hallway museum.

Rashkis Elementary School | Chapel Hill, NC
I’ve worked as an artist and educator all of my life. In the 1990’s my husband and I, along with our three young children, worked as professional puppeteers, writing and performing original shows in museums and theaters across the state of North Carolina. I am an elementary school teacher striving to amplify the power of creativity and imagination in my students. I love a classroom buzzing with the sound of collaborative conversation and the productive clutter of creative projects.
Fun Facts: 1) Favorite book: Everything written by E. B. White 2) Favorite art medium: papier mache
