Children Across America are Encouraged to Create Solutions to 21st Century Environmental Needs Out of Recycled Materials

LOS ANGELES, April 5, 2016—Today, Imagination Foundation and Time Warner Cable (TWC) announced the launch of the 2016 Earth Day Cardboard Challenge. This Challenge provides an opportunity for children of all ages and the adults who support them to create novel, imaginative and sustainable solutions out of cardboard and other recycled materials.

TWC is presenting the Imagination Foundation’s Earth Day Cardboard Challenge as part of its ‘Go Green’ and Connect a Million Minds® (CAMM) initiatives. Through its Go Green initiative, TWC is raising environmental awareness, using fewer natural resources and generating less waste. CAMM was designed to inspire the next generation of problem solvers by connecting young people to the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

During the month of April, children are encouraged to repurpose cardboard and other recyclables to develop innovative and creative solutions that address environmental themes and issues. From classrooms to backyards, cardboard challenge activities can be large or small, simple or complex, depending on available time, resources and age of participants. The challenge will wrap up around Earth Day, April 22, 2016 when communities all over the country will celebrate the students’ creations.

“The Cardboard Challenge is perhaps one of the most creatively engaging activities a child can do. With our friends at TWC, we’ve designed a special version of it that is a fun all-inclusive activity to celebrate Earth Day,” said Mike McGalliard, executive director of the Imagination Foundation.”  This April, we want kids to creatively explore ecological values and face environmental challenges with optimism and imagination.”

“Since the launch of CAMM in 2009, we have looked for new ways to help young people think creatively about how STEM can solve some of our greatest societal challenges,” said Tessie Topol, TWC’s Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility. “We are proud to partner with the Imagination Foundation on the first-ever Earth Day Cardboard Challenge – a fun, hands-on way for students everywhere to engage with STEM concepts, while becoming more environmentally conscious.”

TWC is hosting Earth Day Cardboard Challenge events across the country. Thousands of students and volunteers are expected to participate, including those with:

  • Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region in Albany
  • EcoRise and Cedars International Academy in Austin
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo
  • Free Arts in New York City
